About this deal

The original version of Overcoming Binge Eating was published in 1995. Since then Part I has become established as a leading source of information on binge eating problems. Meanwhile the treatment program in Part II has been investigated in numerous clinical trials making it possibly the most extensively tested self-help program for any problem. Time after time it has been found to be a potent source of help, either when used on its own or when used with external support (guided self-help). As a result the program has become established as a leading treatment for binge eating problems. In recognition of this, Overcoming Binge Eating was awarded the Seal of Merit from the US Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies and in the UK National Health Service doctors can prescribe the book as if it were a form of medication. Using a Place Based Approach and Generating Collective Impact to Change Outcomes and Practice in the Early Years Kitap, yeme bozuklukları konusunda uluslararası kabul görmüş çalışma ve tedavileriyle tanınan İngiliz Psikiyatrist Christopher G. Fairburn'ün on yıllarca sürmüş olan klinik çalışmalarının sonuçlarıyla geliştirilmiş bir model sunduğu için bu alanda benzersiz ve en fonksiyonel kitaplardan biri olarak değerlendiriliyor. Overcoming Binge Eating has been extensively translated. It is available in Italian, German, Spanish, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish and Greek, and probably other languages too. On the right are copies of the covers of some of the translations. They are remarkably varied. Regrettably, some are entirely inappropriate!

We are aware of issues around accessibility. There is not currently an audio version of Overcoming Binge Eating, however the book is available on kindle, where books can be read aloud using an auto-generated voice. Unfortunately Overcoming Binge Eating is not currently available in British Sign Language. Further Developments Michael Strober, UCLA)…a detailed investigation of these patients’ inner worlds reveals “the omnipresent fear of seeming weak, inadequate and average; the inability to take pleasure in leisure; a reluctance to confront risks and novelty, to engage in uninhibited spontaneous action, or to assert feelings; and the experiencing of impulses and desires as wasteful distractions to achieving higher moral objectives.” Michael Strober argues that personality characteristics of this type result in these people being “hopelessly ill prepared” for the developmental demands of adolescence.

As new knowledge is acquired from empirical research, it leads to advancements in treatment. As a result, the second edition is essentially a new book. It continues to provide a comprehensive and up to date account of what we know about binge eating problems, including those seen in anorexia nervosa, but it also provides much more information about dieting, body weight and body image.By any standard, Dr. Fairburn is the leading authority in our field, so who better to write the definitive book on binge eating? This program is based on vast clinical experience, numerous clinical trials, and a breadth of perspective that few possess. You can trust this book. It is a landmark."--Kelly D. Brownell, PhD, coauthor of Food Fight; Robert L. Flowers Professor of Public Policy and Dean, Sanford School of Public Policy, Duke University The result? I am 9 weeks binge-free and am no longer scared to eat something (biscuit, pastry) for fear that I won't be able to stop and eat 10 more (or more). Nothing else worked like this plan - no diets, supplement, intuitive eating. Funnily enough my weight hasn't changed but I feel happier, healthier with more even moods and it's amazing to learn to love myself at this weight without thinking "I just need to lose a few pounds then I'll feel better about myself". I'm fine just as I am! Thank you Dr Fairburn!

He writes in great detail about the harm of using vomiting and laxatives to purge but writes a mere paragraph about purging with exercise saying that it's 'mostly beneficial' aside from occasional overuse injuries. This is far from the truth. There are people who train hours and hours every day, prioritising this over work and family obligations, isolating themselves from society. Also arguably the most common form of exercise used by bulimics, endurance cardio, is super prone to accidents and injuries. If you've been running for two hours and you trip, you don't even have the reflexes to put your hands out so you fall face down. I've known of many women who've had to have restorative surgery to their face as a result of purge exercise. And the worst thing about this form of purging is that it's so hidden and people glorify people for being this fit but secretly they're living in this world of shame and secrecy and guilt. I would have thought a book that is supposedly the ultimate self help book on binge eating would have talked about this. And lastly I was really annoyed by the chapter comparing food compulsions to drug addiction. While I do agree that most drug addicts don't want to change. As they say in the meetings 'denial is the cornerstone of addiction', there are a number of drug addictions for which this isn't true and he didn't talk about any of them! I would have loved to have seen food compulsions compared to addictions of cigarettes/vapes and marijuana. Many people using these drugs are constantly trying to quit and anecdotally many ex smokers describe giving up cigarettes and taking up food for comfort. I myself rarely overate until I quit smoking and since then I haven't stopped. Guide for Healthcare Professionals: Telephoning Relatives about the Death of a Patient from COVID-19 As for the book, I'm not going to dress it up, it absolutely works. But you need to be ready for change, you need to accept the fact you're probably not going to lose weight (at least for a while) you need to put the work in, and you will undoubtedly need to face a demon or three. Als je een probleem hebt met het onder controle krijgen van je eetgedrag, is dit boek voor jou, ongeacht je gewicht. Het geeft je inzicht in je eetprobleem en laat zien waarom dit probleem zichzelf in stand houdt. Het helpt je om je eetbuien te overwinnen – zelfstandig of onder begeleiding van een therapeut.

Readers have posted online calling the previous version of this book 'a godsend' and 'the best book out there.' This substantially revised second edition is as good as the first and sets the standard for self-help books. This clearly written, practical guide is invaluable for anyone suffering from binge eating problems."--Roz Shafran, PhD, Institute of Child Health, University College London,United Kingdom In addition to this printed self-help version of CBT-E, a digital form of CBT-E is under development. Full Book Name: Overcoming Binge Eating: The Proven Program to Learn Why You Binge and How You Can StopOverwin je eetbuien bespreekt de meest recente feiten en inzichten in de psychische en lichamelijke aspecten van eetstoornissen. Het biedt een zeer effectief, wetenschappelijk getoetst zelfhulpprogramma. Daarnaast is het een nuttige handleiding voor huisartsen, therapeuten en diëtisten. p. 94 Those who develop bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa are unusually compliant and conscientious as children. They are often somewhat shy and solitary, and they may have had difficulty mixing with other children. In addition, they tend to be competitive and achievement oriented. They set themselves high standards and work hard to meet them. These traits seem to be the precursors of the low self-esteem and perfectionism seem in many people with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. If BMI is 25.0 or above you are at increased risk of a wide range of health problems, the main ones being the following: creating a “formulation”—a diagram representing the main processes that appear to be maintaining the eating problem. This greatly facilitates change. p. 110 Stig Poulsen and Susanne Lunn from Copenhagen compared 20 sessions of CBT-E (given over 20 weeks) with 100 sessions of psychoanalytic psychotherapy (given over 2 years). CBT-E was clearly superior, both after 20 weeks and after 2 years.
