About this deal

I’m unsure how I feel about Leica using Sigma’s lens optics. I feel it creates too much clutter in the camera system and not enough innovation. Leica, however, has improved on what Sigma did in some ways. Sigma has provided just the right amount of resistance on the manual-focusing ring, but the zoom ring is a shade on the heavy side. The focused-distance window includes markings that indicate depth-of-field for the 24mm focal-length setting but there are no markings for other focal lengths. APS-C (1.6x FOVCF) format camera owners will see an angle of view equivalent to 38.4-112mm on a full frame DSLR. Sigma's first products to feature this technology were the Sigma 12-24mm F4 DG HSM - Art and Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM - Art, which both incorporated a large 80mm aspherical lens as their front lens element. Both the earlier model and the Nikkor have higher levels of aberration than the Art lens up to 50mm, and somewhat beyond for the Sigma’s predecessor. But this is mostly present in the corners of the frame and will likely only be noticeable along high-contrast edges. Software can usually remove chromatic aberration when processing RAW files, but its effect on sharpness can be difficult to correct.

A 24-70mm lens is expected to have distortion – barrel at the wide end that transitions to pincushion at the long end. The Sigma has an 82mm front element (vs 77mm on the Tamron). If you are an outdoor shooter that new CPL is going to be pricey However If that 82mm is what is required to produce the 24mm short end versus 28mm then I am all for it. I just shot Thanksgiving with this lens and knew that 28mm would be tough to get the big rooms and dining room tables full of people in the frame. The difference in 24mm and 28mm is significant whereas the 70mm versus 75mm long end made little difference to me when composing.

Metal body with weather sealing. This is probably the biggest thing. Leica has IP-rated their cameras, and if Leica rehoused this lens, we’re confident that the build quality will be that much higher. The Sigma 24-70 HSM shares a 15.0" (380mm) MFD (Minimum Focusing Distance) with several other 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses, but it trails its class with a 0.19x MM (Maximum Magnification). Sigma Announces New 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art Zoom Lens for Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras; Available in Sony E-mount and L-mount

After reading our previous update, Leica reached out to us to see what the issue was because they were apparently not sharing the same experience. The problems that we saw happened to a few cameras, including my personal Leica SL2s. However, for a few buddies of mine, the remedy was a simple factory reset of the camera and/or the lens. While the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM A is good performer and represents good value overall, it’s not quite what we expected from an Art series lens. Still, it has relatively uniform sharpness across the frame over all focal lengths, while levels of chromatic aberration, distortion, and vignetting are all well-controlled for this type of lens. The 24mm end is great for landscape photography, for shooting indoors and in other tight places and for a wide range of other uses. PAST BYLINES: Gear Patrol, PC Mag, Geek.com, Digital Photo Pro, Resource Magazine, Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Finance, IGN, PDN, and others. The score of 0[-]/5[0]/11[+] shows that the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 DG DN Art is quite well-featured with the unique option to get the lens-mount swapped. The sample images above show that even with the lens profile applied vignetting is not completely eliminated. With automatic shading compensation the extreme corners are lifted about 1.1-1.2 EV. Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.

Had this lens four years now and got it to upgrade the superb DA SMC 18-55 3.5-4.5 that came with my now dead K100D. This was my first non kit walk around lens and it's attatched to the camera unless I need longer reach. It's what you expect from EX Glass, it's an absolute tank. HSM is snappy enough for my needs (Portrait and kids photography and some landscape. I've used it for astro and it's done the job nicely too) The only real downside is that it can be a touch soft at 2.8 to 3.5 but I've used it at 3.5 with good enough results on print up to 10x8s. It's bokeh could be better but I have realistically nothing to complain about. I was considering a 16-50 2.8 Pentax * but I decided against it because this came up used from a reputable dealer at a few hundred pounds sterling cheaper. If I didn't have this tomorrow I'd replace it in kind.

Sigma 24-70DN Build and Handling

At 35mm, the center of the frame again remains sharp at f/2.8, but the mid and peripheral areas of the image circle take an additional hit. The Leica 24-70mm f2.8 SL is a Leica branded lens with Sigma’s optics. Optically speaking, Leica isn’t innovating at all here. But where the innovations come in is with the performance and build quality. Leica gave the lens an all-metal body and minimally increased its weight. They also boosted the autofocus performance. Basically, they innovated on and improved Sigma’s lens. But otherwise, this is a 24-70mm f2.8 lens through and through. They haven’t reinvented the wheel at all. Tech Specs So how does the Sigma 24–70 F2.8 Art handle bright light sources and flare? It's definitely a mixed bag and the impact will largely depend on the kind of photography the lens is used for.
